I was reading in a book called "Sunset with God" about spider monkeys. From the story I gather that spider monkeys are quick and tiny. People were trying to capture them with tranquilizer guns and nets to no avail. Soon they discovered that by placing a peanut in a narrow mouth bottle they could capture the spider monkey. How, you ask. The monkey would reach in to grab the peanut and could not pull his hand out while grasping the peanut. Nor could he move as the bottle weight would be more than the monkey's weight! Even if there was a pile of peanuts on the ground right there beside the monkey, he would not let go of that one peanut!
Last night when Slick and I went home, we were beat down to our knees by a situation that we have no control over nor were we apart of creating. But it threatens our spiritual refuge. Looking for comfort, reassurance or any kind of hope only netted a brick wall. The kids came in and our spirits were so low we could not be consoled.
Maybe we were like the spider monkey, holding on so tight and forgetting to let God have this problem that has the potential of bringing such destruction to our spiritual lives. We were stubbornly clinging to the only thing we could see; that 'humans' very seldom forgive as we ourselves are so guilty of doing. By letting go and letting God have complete control over this situation at least for us, we reclaim our peace and joy spiritually.
"Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13-14
